Awards season is that time of year when celebrities and A-listers from all walks of life can look to reinvent their image and spark a narrative about themselves overnight. With the speed of development and advancement in the fashion and beauty industries today, every calendar year seems to bring with it a new trick or swerve that completely changes up the game from an industry perspective. And celebrities, all too aware of the value that being attached to some cutting-edge style can have for their brand, are willing to get daring during awards season to be seen as a face of a particular new style. With all this in mind, here are five ensembles from the 2020 Grammy Awards red carpet that really took risks and seem destined to set trends for the year ahead:
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish took the Grammy Awards by storm with this head-to-toe green camo sweatsuit from Gucci. To help complete the look, she also dyed her hair green and painted her nails neon green to match, rocking fingerless gloves to showcase them. To accessorize, Eilish also sported tiny black sunglasses, as well as some large Gucci earrings.
Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande walked the carpet sporting major princess vibes with this poufy number. Huge, fluffy and gorgeous, this gray gown designed by Giambattista Valli made quite the statement. To bring the look home, Grande paired her voluminous attire with velvet gloves and some large diamond earrings courtesy of Lorraine Schwartz.
Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa hit the red carpet rocking this beautiful white satin two-piece ensemble, designed by Alexander Wang. This set consisted of a corset-style top paired with a high-waisted miniskirt. Lipa sported some simple accompanying jewelry, which helped accent the retro vibes her outfit gave off. She also elected for a middle part in her hair, tied into a top knot.
Lana del Rey
Lana del Rey’s attire for the Grammys was a bit of a twist in that her dress was a last-minute, self-bought store purchase! In the era of professional, day-long styling sessions and custom-label fashion designers, del Rey’s decision to minimalize by just picking out an Aidan Mattox dress she liked from Saks on Fifth Avenue and rocking it without having a professional to “style” her has created a dialogue in the wake of the event on the excessive nature of the industry. And, regardless of our individual thoughts on the matter, absolutely nothing is more iconic in the world of fashion than sparking a conversation with nothing more than your wardrobe choices. For that reason alone, del Rey is most worthy of inclusion on our list.
Camila Cabello
Camila Cabello looked extremely glamorous for this year’s Grammy Awards, sporting a strapless black monochrome high-low gown from Versace. The gown’s style showcased elaborate fringe detailing and embroidered crystals on the minidress underneath. Cabello completed the outfit with a pair of classic black pumps, as well as an iconic $2 million diamond necklace from Le Vian.
