VMA Sighting: Joico Celebrity Stylist JStayReady On Doja Cat’s Looks

The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs, to be short and sweet) were a banger this year, especially since it was hosted by Doja Cat. It is more than fitting: this superstar had 5 nominations to her name this year alone, and was picked as a performer for the night. “Kiss Me More” was highlighted with a nom for Best Video of the Year, and of course, Doja herself was nominated for Best Artist of the Year.

She also rocked some killer looks.

We caught up with Joico Celebrity Stylist JStayReady, who broke down all four of the hairstyles Doja Cat rocked during the VMA event. Jared “JStayReady” is an up and coming hairstylist who is known for “protective” hairstyles, or hairstyles that conceal the ends of hair. He includes extensions, wigs, twists, and braids to achieve these looks.

For Doja Cat, JStayReady has stated that all the styles were inspired by 90s rock glam. Here’s the product and technique breakdown:

Look 1:

The Color:

To achieve perfect color, JstayReady used the Bond-Protecting Color Optimizer to prep the hair for treatment. He then followed with two formulas: LumiShine LUMI10 10 Minute Permanent Color 1N with LUMI 10 Accelerator, and for the pop of red, he used Color Intensity Ruby Red. For post treatment, Bond-Strengthening Color Treatment was used.

The Style:

On wet hair, he used Joico Joi Whip Firm Hold Design Foam for those awesome, defined curls. He twisted the hair into a half-up, half-down ‘do with bantu knots, and added curly red hair for extra “razzle dazzle.” He set everything using Joico Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray, and added Joico Colorful Glow Anti-Fade Serum for more shine.

The Color:

JStayReady went blonde for this one! The blonde treatment was the Blonde Life Lightening Powder with 10 Volume LumiShine Developer, followed by LumiShine Demi-Permanent Liquid 10V +10SB with 5 Volume LumiShine Developer.

The Style:

That blonde color does the heavy lifting here, so the style is pretty simple. He used Joico Defy Damage Protective Shield to protect the hair while he blowdried the hair straight, and used the Fast-Dry Finishing Spray for hold.
